If youāve got a big dog, you already know the truth: theyāre gentle giants, full of love, fur⦠and usually a lot of grooming needs. At Pezzy Paws, big breeds hold a special place in our hearts (and on our grooming table!). From Newfies and Shepherds to Bernese Mountain Dogs and Rotties, we adore them all ā and weāre especially experienced with giant breeds thanks to our own big baby, Honey, a St Bernard Cross English Mastiff. Working with Honey every day has given us all the know-how, patience, and love needed to make your big dogās grooming experience stress-free and enjoyable. š¾
Hereās everything you need to know about caring for your oversized best friend.

š§¼WHY BIG DOGS NEED REGULAR GROOMING
Large breeds often have thicker coats, heavier shedding cycles, and skin that needs extra attention. Even short-coated big dogs ā like Staffies, Labs, Mastiffs, and Bullies ā shed more than people realise.
Regular grooming helps to:
Remove loose hair before it ends up all over your house
Prevent matting, especially around armpits, underside, and breeches
Keep skin healthy and irritation-free
Reduce dander
Distribute natural oils for a shiny, healthy coat
Keep nails short to protect joints
A big dog whoās groomed regularly is happier, healthier, and far more comfortable.

šTHE BIG BREED SHEDDING TRUTH
Big dogs shed⦠a lot. Short coats, double coats, long coats ā they all create fluff storms.
During a proper deshed, we lift out the impacted hair you canāt remove at home, then blow it out safely using salon equipment. For those who need extra pampering, we also offer deshed mud treatments, which deeply nourish the coat, remove dead hair, and soothe the skin ā leaving your pup soft, shiny, and refreshed.
Some owners say their dogs feel ā10lbs lighterā after a groom ā and honestly, theyāre not wrong!

šGENTLE HANDLING FOR GIANTS
At Pezzy Paws, all grooms are one-to-one, which is especially important for big breeds who may feel overwhelmed in busy salons.
For our giant babies, we focus on:
Gentle, confident handling
Sit-down breaks for senior dogs or pups with arthritis
Slow introductions to equipment
Extra time for nervous or rescue dogs
Positive reinforcement and lots of praise
Comfort always comes first. We want your dog to feel safe, relaxed, and happy ā not rushed.
