šŸ»šŸ’šTHE BIG DOG GROOMING GUIDE: WHY LARGE BREEDS NEED EXTRA CARE

If you’ve got a big dog, you already know the truth: they’re gentle giants, full of love, fur… and usually a lot of grooming needs. At Pezzy Paws, big breeds hold a special place in our hearts (and on our grooming table!). From Newfies and Shepherds to Bernese Mountain Dogs and Rotties, we adore them all — and we’re especially experienced with giant breeds thanks to our own big baby, Honey, a St Bernard Cross English Mastiff. Working with Honey every day has given us all the know-how, patience, and love needed to make your big dog’s grooming experience stress-free and enjoyable. 🐾

Here’s everything you need to know about caring for your oversized best friend.

🧼WHY BIG DOGS NEED REGULAR GROOMING

Large breeds often have thicker coats, heavier shedding cycles, and skin that needs extra attention. Even short-coated big dogs — like Staffies, Labs, Mastiffs, and Bullies — shed more than people realise.

Regular grooming helps to:

  • Remove loose hair before it ends up all over your house

  • Prevent matting, especially around armpits, underside, and breeches

  • Keep skin healthy and irritation-free

  • Reduce dander

  • Distribute natural oils for a shiny, healthy coat

  • Keep nails short to protect joints

A big dog who’s groomed regularly is happier, healthier, and far more comfortable.

šŸƒTHE BIG BREED SHEDDING TRUTH

Big dogs shed… a lot. Short coats, double coats, long coats — they all create fluff storms.

During a proper deshed, we lift out the impacted hair you can’t remove at home, then blow it out safely using salon equipment. For those who need extra pampering, we also offer deshed mud treatments, which deeply nourish the coat, remove dead hair, and soothe the skin — leaving your pup soft, shiny, and refreshed.

Some owners say their dogs feel ā€œ10lbs lighterā€ after a groom — and honestly, they’re not wrong!

šŸ’šGENTLE HANDLING FOR GIANTS

At Pezzy Paws, all grooms are one-to-one, which is especially important for big breeds who may feel overwhelmed in busy salons.

For our giant babies, we focus on:

  • Gentle, confident handling

  • Sit-down breaks for senior dogs or pups with arthritis

  • Slow introductions to equipment

  • Extra time for nervous or rescue dogs

  • Positive reinforcement and lots of praise

Comfort always comes first. We want your dog to feel safe, relaxed, and happy — not rushed.

āœ‚ļøWHAT A BIG DOG GROOM INCLUDES

A full big-breed groom at Pezzy Paws can include:

  • Warm bubbly bath

  • Coat-specific shampoo & conditioning

  • Blow dry

  • Trimming or restyling of the coat to suit breed, age, or owner preference

  • Full deshed or tidy

  • Optional deshed mud treatment

  • Nail clip

  • Ear clean

  • Hygiene tidy (if needed)

  • Optional extras like Blueberry Facial or Emmi-

We tailor the groom to your dog’s coat type, age, and mobility. Every groom is personalised — just like Honey’s!

🐾HOW OFTEN SHOULD BIG DOGS BE GROOMED?

Every dog is different, but as a guide:

  • Short coats: every 6–8 weeks

  • Double coats: every 6 weeks (more during shedding season)

  • Long coats: every 4–6 weeks

Regular brushing at home helps, but professional deshedding and grooming makes a huge difference.

šŸ’—WE LOVE BIG BREEDS AT PEZZY PAWS

Whether your dog is 10kg or 80kg+, they’re welcomed with open arms (and plenty of belly rubs). Big dogs are often called ā€œtoo much workā€ at traditional salons — but not here. We celebrate them. We’re trained, prepared, and genuinely excited when a giant fluff monster walks through the door. And having Honey at home gives us that extra insight and love for all the big dogs who come to us.
